FIFA has announced a series of severe measures against Russia, on whose soil no international competition will be played, its flag and anthem are banned and its national team will only be allowed to play under the name 'Russian Football Union (RFU)' due to the invasion of Ukraine.
What did Lewandowski say about not playing in the playoff against Russia for qualification to Qatar?
This was agreed on Sunday by the FIFA Council Bureau, which adopted "the first measures regarding the war in Ukraine".
"First and foremost, FIFA wishes to reiterate its condemnation of Russia's use of force in its invasion of Ukraine. Violence is never a solution and FIFA expresses its deepest sympathy to all those affected by what is happening in Ukraine," it said.
FIFA furthermore "calls once again for the urgent restoration of peace and the immediate commencement of a constructive dialogue. FIFA remains in close contact with the Ukrainian Football Association and members of the Ukrainian soccer community who have requested support to leave the country as long as the current conflict persists."
"To deal with football-related matters and in coordination with UEFA, the FIFA Council Bureau - in which the president and the six presidents of the confederations participate - has unanimously decided to take the first immediate measures, in line with the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and which will be applicable until further notice," it states.
The first measure is that "no international competitions will be played on the territory of Russia, and home matches will be played on neutral territory and without spectators".
Also, "the member association representing Russia shall participate in any competition under the name 'Russian Football Union (RFU)' and not 'Russia'".
And, thirdly, "the flag or anthem of Russia shall not be used at matches involving teams of the Football Union" of this country.
FIFA adds that it "will continue its ongoing dialogue with the IOC, UEFA and other sports organizations to determine any additional measures or sanctions, including possible exclusion from competitions, to be applied in the near future if the situation does not improve rapidly. The FIFA Council Bureau remains on standby to take any such decisions."
Regarding the upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifiers, FIFA states that it "has taken good note of the positions expressed through social media by the Polish, Czech and Swedish federations, and has already engaged in dialogue with all these associations. FIFA will remain in close contact to try to find appropriate and acceptable solutions together."
"FIFA's thoughts are with all those affected by this shocking and worrying situation," he concludes.
