Manchester United has already begun an "exhaustive" search process for a new manager for next season.

United, who sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the end of last year and hired German Ralf Rangnick until the end of the season, have already begun the process of finding a new permanent manager.

This was confirmed by John Murtough, the team's sporting director, at the quarterly team meeting.

"We are already undergoing a thorough process to sign a new coach on a permanent basis who will take charge of the team from this summer with the aim of getting us back into contention for domestic and European titles," Murtough said in remarks reported by The Athletic.

Rangnick has not responded as expected

Rangnick, who has done little to improve United's situation since Solsjaer's departure in November, signed a six-month contract and agreed to stay on for at least two years thereafter in a consultant position with the team.

"We know that consistency is the key and we hope to finish in the top four this season in the Premiership. But I want to reiterate that this is not United's target and everyone at the club hopes to fight for the top trophies," the manager added.

United are currently fourth in the league, two points clear of fifth, and still alive in the Champions League, where they will play the second leg of their last-16 tie against Atletico Madrid after a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

Which managers could replace him?

Mauricio Pochettino

In the English press, the possibility of the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, former Tottenham coach and currently in charge of Paris Saint Germain, has been discussed.

The option looks difficult since the Argentine is under contract with the French team, in addition to having a high-level squad with players like Mbappé, Messi, Verrati, Neymar, Donnaruma, among many others.

The Argentine coach took Tottenham to the UEFA Champions League final in 2019 but they lost to Liverpool and also made them runners-up in the Premier League once.

Zinedine Zidane

The French coach has been without a club since leaving Real Madrid last season and has been linked with the Red Devils. It was even believed that he would be replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but that was not the case.

It is said that his wife is comfortable in Madrid and that moving to Manchester does not please her at all. However, for next season the Frenchman could reappear as the candidate to take the reins of Manchester United.
