Since Edson Álvarez arrived in AFC Ajax in 2019 out of Club América, he’s become one of the best Mexican players in Europe, especially on the last two seasons, as he’s essential part of Erik ten Hag’s starting XI, and a vital piece in last season’s championship in Eredivisie.

The 24-year-old defensive midfielder has been linked to multiple teams since the last summer transfer window, although Ajax was able to keep him for the 2021-22 season, in which they are close to becoming back-to-back champions.

But Álvarez has showed strength in defense as well as a great field vision, and given his young age, he’s probably playing his last season with the Ajacieden, especially now that Premier League side Crystal Palace has said that they’re willing to pay whatever price Ajax asks for him.

Will he arrive in the Premier League?

It’s not the first time that Crystal Palace has tried to acquire the Mexico international, as they first approached Ajax last summer transfer window, although negotiations weren’t fruitful. But now, Crystal Palace are all in on their pursue of “El Machín”.

According to British journal The Sun, The Eagles are willing to pay the $27.5 million that Ajax is asking for Edson Álvarez, as they know they need to strengthen their midfield for the next season. In addition to Álvarez, Patrick Vieira is also interested in offensive midfielder Brennan Johnson, from Nottingham Forest.

How’s Crystal Palace doing in Premier League?

Crystal Palace were eliminated from Carabao Cup in the second round by a 1-0 defeat against Watford, but are still alive in FA Cup, as they’ll face Stoke City in the fifth round, on March 1st, in a game that will be played in Selhurst Park.

Patrick Vieira’s team has had an irregular participation in Premier League, in which they currently stand 13, as a result of five victories, 11 draws and nine defeats. Although The Eagles might not be the team in which Álvarez followers would like him to play in, it’s true that arriving in Premier League will open a lot of doors for him especially if he maintains the regularity shown with Ajax.

Edson Álvarez’s numbers with Ajax

Edson Álvarez currently is playing his third season since he arrived in Johan Cruyff Arena. Currently Ajax is Eredivisie leader, after 23 games, from which they’ve won 18, draw three more, and lost the remainder two. They’re five points away from the second place, PSV Eindhoven, with 11 more games to be played.

They’re also going to play against Primeira Liga side Benfica in the round of 16 in Champions League, on a match that seems the easiest out of the remainder teams on the European tournament. Since 2019, he’s played 89 games wearing Ajax colors, in which he’s scored six goals and assisted three times.
