Chelsea's multi-million dollar contract with Nike in jeopardy following sanctions against Roman Abramovich

The package of sanctions that the UK Government has imposed on Russian billionaires, including Roman Abramovich, may leave Chelsea in a very complicated position as it "temporarily" loses its main sponsor, 'Three', and Nike will not profit from product sales in the physical and online store.

The sanction imposed by the British government will not allow Chelsea to fill its stadium, sell or buy players, renew players such as Antonio Rüdiger, or complete the sale of the club to one of the ten tycoons who were stalking it.

To make matters worse, the telecommunications company 'Three', the main sponsor of the London team and which contributes 50 million euros per season, has "temporarily" suspended its contract with the club due to these harsh measures.

And Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich's rush to get rid of the club was no exaggeration. The UK has frozen his assets and prevented him from doing business with UK citizens. What does this mean? That Chelsea will not be able to reap any profits from any transactions.

Why is Nike also at risk?

The company that sponsors and designs jerseys will be affected by the ban on the team selling merchandise. The team's physical and online stores cannot operate. The club will no longer be able to sell flags, scarves, and other official merchandise. This restriction does not apply to the sale of stock held by third parties such as high-end sports retailers. All of this was set out by the British government.

Nike, unlike Three, has not yet issued a statement on the matter, but no doubt they are not in the least pleased with the measures being imposed against Chelsea, which will affect their profits because all products for sale will be suspended until an agreement is reached with the government.

What other sanctions has Chelsea received?

Another blow to Chelsea's finances comes at the stadium: they will not be able to sell tickets for matches as of March 10. This has a direct impact on the budget of the Blues because, if Stamford Bridge is already one of the stadiums of the big ones that collects the least, having a capacity of only 44,000 seats, now only members will be able to attend the matches.

The figures are not public, but it is estimated that the Fulham club has between 28,000 and 30,000 members. The club store in the vicinity of Stamford Bridge will be closed immediately.

Chelsea's new operating license is effective today and has a deadline of May 31.
