Americanistas are celebrating as Sarah Luebbert will stay with Club America women´s team. With this decision, the player says no to her return to the NWSL and her team, the Chicago Red Stars.
The 24-year-old player arrived at the club on loan for the Grita Mexico Apertura 2021 and was expected to return to the Red Stars at the end of the campaign, as her charter belongs to the NWSL club.
However, due to her great performance in the tournament, the Aguilas decided to keep the player, who was a determining factor in the Coapa club's ability to end Tigres' 40-match unbeaten streak in the tournament.
In that match, Luebbert and Daniela Espinosa scored for the Aguilas to not only win the match 2-1 but also put an end to the Amazons' 40-match unbeaten streak.
Stephany Mayor scored for Tigres, but her goal could not prevent her team from losing their unbeaten streak.
Everything seemed to indicate that Luebbert's return to the Chicago Red Stars was imminent, especially since the team has been without its big names.
Sarah Gorden, Katie Johnson, Makenzy Doniak, and Julie Ertz decided to leave for other teams in part to seek more opportunities, and in part to get away from one of the clubs where sexual harassment of players was a constant problem.
At a time when the team is without a coach and several of its most important players, it was logical to think that the club would want a player of Luebbert's caliber back.
It was even known that the Red Stars wanted her back precisely to start the next tournament with her and that they had already conveyed this concern to the Mexican team, so the player had already said goodbye to her teammates.
This move was going to return Luebbert to the NWSL, a player who decided to try her luck in Mexico because in the Chicago team she did not have the minutes or the prominence she was looking for, which did happen with the Aguilas.
But apparently, this return to the NWSL will not happen and Luebbert will continue to be fundamental in the game plan of Craig Harrington, current coach of the Eagles.
Club America women's team surprised their followers on social networks by how they announced the player's permanence in the club.
The team's Twitter account first asked its followers to share songs to kick-off 2022.
Once the followers commented on their songs, a video appeared of Sarah Luebbert singing them, and announcing her permanence in the team for the 2022 campaign.
In response to this announcement, the club's followers congratulated the board for keeping the player and even made fun of the fact that while the women's team is being reinforced with everything, the men's team is falling short.
While her full potential was not seen last season due to injury, fans will now be watching her performance even more closely.
