One of the players that Xavi was close to convincing Barcelona to sell this summer is Robert Lewandowski. Carrusel Deportivo reports that Xavi would have accepted the sale of Lewandowski if a good offer arrived. This has now changed; Hansi Flick has decided to keep the player. Flick believes that Barça’s current squad is competitive and thinks that he can improve their performance.

Lewandowski shined under Flick at Bayern Munich from 2019 to 2021, as he was arguably the best player in the world. In the 2019/2020 season, Lewandowski, Flick, and Bayern Munich won the treble: The Bundesliga title, the DFB Pokal Cup, and the Champions League. In the 19/20 season, Lewandowski played 47 matches across all competitions with Bayern Munich. He scored a total of 55 goals and provided ten assists.

The striker had a decent 2023/2024 season with FC Barcelona, as he played a total of 49 matches across all competitions. He scored a total of 26 goals and provided nine assists this season, and his last goal came against Sevilla in the 2-1 win on Xavi’s final match as manager. Flick will use Lewandowski as the main striker for FC Barcelona next season instead of selling him to Saudi Arabia, which is interested in signing him during the summer transfer window.

Xavi’s words for Flick about the FC Barcelona job

Xavi spoke in his last press conference after the 2-1 win against Sevilla and was asked about any recommendation he has for the new manager. Xavi left a warning for the next manager and said, “To the new manager, I tell you: You will suffer. This is a difficult job, and you have to be patient.”

When asked if a foreign manager will be treated better or not, Xavi said, “I don’t know. The only thing that can save you at this club is winning. This is a fact, whether you’re a foreigner or not.”
