Lionel Messi was heavily booed in Monterrey CF's stadium, the Estadio BBVA and some Monterrey fans were involving Cristiano Ronaldo. The Mexican fans at the stadium constantly booed Messi whenever the Argentine touched the ball or was attempting to dribble past players. This was the first competitive match Messi played on Mexican soil, and it seems that he is not the favorite in the GOAT debate between him and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Monterrey win over Messi's Inter Miami felt so right for the Mexican supporters, and they even mocked the Argentine after the game. A large group of Monterrey fans were celebrating the win and advancing to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup by doing Ronaldo's famous "SIU" celebration.
Monterrey's admiration for Ronaldo instead of Messi was evident in the stadium, and a confrontation occurred between fans. Inter Miami fans and Monterrey fans fought physically because of their different opinions on the two best footballers of all time. Messi seemed like the enemy of Monterrey fans, and Inter Miami fans, while being the minority, tried fighting back with Mexican fans.
At halftime, Monterrey was winning 1-0 against Inter Miami, but things got worse for Messi as the fans in the Mexican stadium repeatedly chanted, "Cristiano, Cristiano" to Messi. Messi did not react, but the chants were very loud, and they demonstrated their admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo over Messi.
