Lionel Messi is one of the greatest players of all time, and many have wondered how he was when he was younger. Many stories from former coaches of him knew that he would be a special player, and the talent was there from the beginning. A video online shows the coordination of a football school that Messi attended in Argentina. Messi was in the youth team of Newell’s Old Boys, and his youth coach, Carlos Marconi, made sure to offer him alfajores, a type of chocolate cookies that he loved when he was a kid. Marconi made a deal with Messi that for every goal he scored, he would get a cookie. Messi would score three to four goals a game, and the young Argentine star would ask for the cookies in return. Marconi made an even bigger challenge for Messi as he would give the young boy two cookies for every header he scored. Marconi mentioned that Messi would purposely flick the ball in the air and head it into the net. Messi would not forget the deal and would go to Marconi to ask for two cookies.

Messi was born on June 24th, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina, and he would often play football with his two older brothers. At eight years old, he was recruited into the youth system of Newell’s Old Boys. Messi was very talented on the ball from a young age, but the issue he had was his struggle to grow. Messi was diagnosed by the doctor with a growth hormone deficiency. Messi’s parents gave their son a regime of growth hormone injections for their soon, but the price of the medications was too much for the family.

FC Barcelona came to the rescue in 2000 when Messi was 13 and was offered to train at the Catalan club’s academy, La Masia. The Catalan club covered the medical bills, and the family moved to Spain. The family, including the young Messi, were homesick, but soon Barcelona became home, and the rest was history. Messi’s size turned out to be a huge advantage as he would dribble past players and into space with pace and ease. This was the playstyle he has always had throughout his career, starting at Newell’s Old Boys youth team, throughout Europe, and then working at Inter Miami.
