Lionel Messi and Argentina started the Copa America right last night as they defeated Canada 2-0 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Argentina is currently the group leader of Group A, and they got their first three points in the tournament. Messi did not score, but he did provide an assist. Although Messi's performance was great, fans were scared when they saw a harsh tackle on the Argentine star in the second half. In the 81st minute, Ismael Kone goes for the ball but at the same time trips Messi, who took the ball and laid it off to Lautaro Martinez. Messi almost goes down to the ground after the tackle, but he continues to run for the ball to keep the play alive. Messi went down to the ground with lots of pain and needed medical attention. At the moment, that tackle did not lead to a serious injury, and the Argentine seems ready for the next game, but Messi will still expect to receive attention to prevent an injury that can keep him out for a long time.
Argentina struggled against Canada, especially in the first half, as the North Americans had a couple of dangerous chances on goal. The second half changed positively for Argentina as they took the lead in the 49th minute. Messi gave a through ball to Alexis Mac Allister, who poked the ball in time for Julian Alvarez before colliding with the Canadian keeper. Alvarez scored into the net, which had two Canadian defenders trying to clear it.
In the 88th minute, Messi gave a perfect pass into space to Lautaro Martinez, who poked the ball in between the keeper's legs. Martinez came on in the 76th minute. Messi got an assist, created the most chances in the match with five, and had three shots on target.
Although Messi was impressed with Argentina, he admitted that the game against Canada was difficult. Messi said, "We knew that the match would be very difficult and physical. In the first half, the spaces were tight. Fortunately, we scored the goal quickly in the second half, but despite that, the match was complicated." Lionel Messi has the most goal contributions in major international tournaments, with 26 goals and 28 assists (54 G/A) in the World Cup and Copa América.
