Inter Miami, with Lionel Messi, suffered a 3-1 loss against Atlanta United yesterday in the MLS at the Chase Stadium. The team was below par, and the away side was dominant throughout the match. Despite the loss, many Inter Miami fans were happy to see Messi score for them again this season as he took a low shot from outside the box to get the team closer to an equalizer. It didn’t arrive, but what did happen was a unique celebration that had many fans talking. Messi appears to look at the bench or the VIP section where his family is and makes hand gestures in front of them. Many fans were confused about what the meaning of it could be. Some believe he is trying to do a celebration where he is pretending to be riding a motorcycle. Others believe it is something personal between him and his family, which makes sense why no one else understands.
Messi scored in the 62nd minute, and the assist came from Sergio Busquets. Atlanta United were leading 2-0 before the Argentine star’s goal as they scored in the 44th minute and in the 59th minute, courtesy of a brace by Saba Lobzhanidze. Atlanta United grabbed their third goal of the day courtesy of Jamal Thiare in the 73rd minute.
A crazy stat that was revealed after the game is that the Atlanta United loss is the first time Messi has lost a match he scored in since Argentina’s loss to Saudi Arabia in the 2022 World Cup. It’s the first time at the club level since Barca’s loss to Celta Vigo in May 2021. Messi did score his 160th goal from outside the penalty spot, which is the most in history.
Inter Miami will be playing this weekend at the Chase Stadium as they will take on St. Louis City. Messi will play the game as well, but it will be his last one with Inter Miami for a while since he will play with the Argentina national team in Copa America. Messi officially joins the Argentina national team camp on Monday to prepare for Copa America.
