Plymouth Argyle's turbulent season has taken another unexpected turn, with reports confirming that a planned documentary about the team's relegation battle has been scrapped. This decision comes on the heels of Wayne Rooney's dismissal as manager after a dismal run of results in the Championship.

Rooney, a former Manchester United and England captain, managed to secure only four victories out of 23 league matches during his tenure. The final blow came with a 2-0 defeat to Oxford United, leaving Plymouth rooted at the bottom of the table and struggling for survival.

A Project with High Hopes, Now Paused

Filming for the documentary began in October at Plymouth’s Harpers Park training ground, with hopes of capturing the team’s fight to avoid relegation. Plymouth initially embraced the project, driven by Rooney and his advisers, who saw an opportunity to boost the club’s profile on platforms like Amazon or Netflix.

However, as results worsened, enthusiasm waned. Reports suggest that the winless streak created a tense environment, prompting Plymouth to pause production last month. Lorton Entertainment, the company behind the project, had previously worked with Rooney on a successful Amazon Prime feature in 2020.

Distraction or Opportunity?

Rooney’s arrival at Plymouth in May 2023 was intended to spearhead the club’s resurgence following their return to the second division. Yet, after securing just one win in his first six matches, the pressure mounted. The documentary, initially seen as a chance to spotlight the club’s story, reportedly became an unwanted distraction.

Plymouth’s leadership approved the project with high hopes for financial and reputational gains. However, filming was limited to only two matches before it was halted indefinitely. Despite this setback, there’s no word yet on whether Plymouth or Rooney will revisit similar projects in the future.

  • Wayne Rooney was sacked after leading Plymouth Argyle to just four wins in 23 Championship matches.
  • The final loss, a 2-0 defeat to Oxford United, left the team at the bottom of the league table.
  • A documentary capturing the team’s struggles was paused due to poor performance and is not expected to resume.
  • The project was backed by Rooney and Lorton Entertainment, with aspirations to air on streaming platforms.
  • Plymouth saw the documentary as a way to enhance their international profile, but it reportedly became a distraction during a critical time.
