The UEFA Champions League Final between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid will take place tomorrow; the game is the season’s biggest match. Many Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund fans will take over London as they are set to be in Wembley Stadium. While many fans are excited about the match, there is also a lot of concern regarding the match and the stadium itself. Wembley Stadium is used to host big finals, but the security was not up to par in the 2020 Euros Final between England and Italy. Because of the incidents of that final three years ago, the English FA invested more than $7 million for this final. Sami Mokbel from the Daily Mail reports that the FA pumped £5m into bolstering Wembley security as they prepare to execute the largest operation in the stadium’s history ahead of the Champions League final on Saturday. More than 50 CCTV cameras were added along with heavy security outside of the stadium according to the New York Times.

This investment would prevent the violence witnessed in the EURO 2020 Final at Wembley Stadium. First Post reports that an independent review of the incident in the EURO 2020 Final identified more than 20 “near-misses” that could’ve led to serious injuries or even death after many individuals tried entering the stadium without a ticket. BBC reported that the Metropolitan Police made 51 arrests connected to the final, and 26 of them were at Wembley Stadium.

A report from Sky Sports suggested that 2,000 ticketless fans stormed the stadium to try and get in, which led to a horrible situation where fans could’ve been seriously harmed or even killed. Many couldn’t believe the security in Wembley was not ready for a situation like that since it was the biggest game for the England national team since the World Cup win in 1966.

Baroness Casey spoke about the incident at Wembley Stadium in the EUROS 2020 Final and considered the situation not being handled correctly and as a “collective failure.” Her report read, “We are genuinely lucky that there was not much more serious injury or worse, and need to take the toughest possible action against people who think a football match is somehow an excuse to behave like that. I am clear that the primary responsibility for what went wrong at Wembley that day lies with those who lost control of their own behavior.”

How many fans will each team have in the Champions League Final?

Wembley Stadium’s official capacity is 90,000, but UEFA will only distribute 86,600 tickets for the Champions League Final. 60,000 tickets will be available for fans and the general public. 25,000 tickets will be reserved for Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid fans each. 26,600 tickets will not be available for the public as, according to UEFA, they will be reserved for the “local organizing structure UEFA’s member national associations, commercial partners, broadcasters, and UEFA.” This will be Real Madrid’s first Champions League Final at Wembley Stadium and Dortmund return to a UCL final at Wembley; the last time was in 2013.
