Following a year of inconsistency, including a group stage exit at the Copa America, the United States men's national team has undergone a significant overhaul with the appointment of Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino.

And on Saturday, Pochettino's USMNT secured a winning start at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas. After a goalless first half, goals from Yunus Musah (49') and Ricardo Pepi (94') sealed a 2-0 victory over Panama.

Musah's opener was a classic AC Milan combination, with Christian Pulisic providing a pinpoint cross that the midfielder headed home. Pepi's late goal was a well-taken finish from a Haji Wright assist.

While the USMNT will have areas to improve upon, the victory provides a positive start to the Pochettino era. However, the real test will come next Tuesday when the team travels to Mexico for another friendly.

Road to 2026 begins now for USMNT

Pochettino has expressed confidence in his team's ability to make a significant impact at the 2026 World Cup, which the United States will co-host with Mexico and Canada. "The USMNT has a huge responsibility in the 2026 World Cup," Pochettino said. "We have the talent and the potential to achieve great things."

The match against Mexico is always a highly anticipated fixture, and this one carries added significance as both teams look to establish their dominance in the region. With Pochettino at the helm, the USMNT will be aiming to build on their recent success and make a statement ahead of the World Cup.
