The match lasted four hours after Morocco fans invaded the pitch and threw items at the Argentina players after Cristian Medina scored int he last minute to give Argentina a 2-2 draw. The referee suspended the match and let the players go back to the locker room but he never finished the game.
The referee allowed play to continue after more than an hour and a half and gave the game three more minutes. The referee checked the Argentina goal on VAR and disallowed it. Tagliafico wrote, "Leaving the circus aside, are we going to talk about the reason the match was suspended or are we going to keep pretending it didn't happen? If the situation were reversed, I can't imagine what people would be saying."
Nicolas Otamendi, the captain of the Argentina team at the Summer Olympics, spoke after the match and said, "It's a historic disgrace. Nothing like this has ever happened before. Morocco didn't want to play, and neither did we. We waited for an hour and forty minutes, but no one told us anything. It’s frustrating because these are the Olympic Games."
Javier Mascherano spoke after the match and revealed a crazy detail that happened before the match against Morocco. Mascherano said, "Yesterday, they broke into our property, and they robbed us. [Thiago] Almada's stuff was stolen. They ask us to show ID for everything, but then they let these things happen. Fireworks got thrown at us. They told us the game was over. Even Morocco didn't want to play."
He continued and said, "I don’t know what happened. We were in the locker room for almost an hour and a half. At no point were we informed about what could happen. As a player, I’ve never experienced security failing seven times in a match at this level. It was a disgrace. Today, they invaded the pitch seven times and then threw fireworks at us. They told us the match was finished 2-2. Neither we nor Morocco wanted to continue playing."
Geronimo Rulli's wife was in the stadium during the Argentina vs Morocco match, and she revealed that she had been kicked out of the stadium after being told that the game had finished 2-2. She was shocked when she heard that the game continued after it was suspended for nearly two hours. Rulli's wife wrote, "They kicked us out of the stadium, and they told us the match ended 2-2. Two hours later, we find out that they ruled out the goal and that they would play for three more minutes."
