Manchester City took the lead fairly early as Rodri opened the score in the 11th minute. Jeremy Doku is played on the right by Phil Foden, and the Belgian winger cuts it back to Rodri, who smashes the ball into the roof of the net. VAR had a look to see if Doku was offside, but he was just on, and the goal was given. Aston Villa responded with an equalizer in the 20th minute after a beautiful one-two between Morgan Rogers and Jhon Duran led the Colombian striker to score past Stefan Ortega to make it 1-1. VAR had a look at the play for offside, but the goal was given when Duran was onside.

Just before halftime, Foden is fouled outside the box by Douglas Luiz. That was a mistake for the Brazilian, as Foden would score from the free kick when he bent the ball through the wall and into the net. Zaniolo came off the wall which allowed the ball to get past and into the net. In the second half, Aston Villa was threatened with a few chances, but Man City scored again. Foden grabbed his brace in the 62nd minute after a great pass by Rodri. Rodri performs a croqueta pass to Foden, and the English attacking midfielder slots the ball into the net with a low finish in the bottom right corner.
