Chelsea FC has been looking for a manager these past couple of weeks after parting ways with Mauricio Pochettino at the end of the season. Rumors started to grow, suggesting that Jose Mourinho was set to become the head coach of Chelsea once again. That dream for some Chelsea fans was over this past weekend as Mourinho was announced as the new manager for Fernebache. Chelsea instead went for a former assistant manager for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Chelsea have appointed former Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca. The London club announced it a couple of hours ago, and the Italian coach is one of the most promising managers coming up. Maresca promoted Leicester City back to the Premier League after one year in the Championship. Chelsea had to pay over $10 million to bring in the Italian coach, but his salary would be among the lowest in the Premier League. Maresca is not expected to earn what Pochettino earned, which was over $11 million. His salary range could be at around $6.3 million per year at Chelsea, with a five year contract with an option to extend until the summer of 2030.
The Italian spoke about joining Chelsea as the manager of the team ahead of next season. Maresca said, “To join Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world, is a dream for any coach. I look forward to working with a very talented group of players and staff to develop a team that continues the club’s tradition of success and makes our fans proud.”
Leicester City, under Maresca, has been impressive in the Championship. The Foxes won the Championship with 97 points after 46 games played and a record of 31 wins, four draws, and 11 losses. They reached the quarterfinals of the FA Cup but were eliminated by Chelsea.
Enzo Maresca was the manager of Manchester City’s U23 team from 2020 to 2021. He then became the assistant manager for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City from the summer of 2022 to last summer, during the treble season. The Italian then took over Leicester City for 53 matches, and now he will be the coach of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
