Lionel Messi is one of the greatest players of all time, and he has created some memorable moments on the pitch, including some iconic celebrations. Messi's teammate from the Argentina national team, Julian Alvarez, revealed that Messi regretted making a particular celebration he had done before and that he would never repeat it again. The Man City striker was asked about what celebration he would copy when he scores a goal. Alvarez said, "If I had to choose one, it would be Messi's celebration in the World Cup against the Netherlands. I think he later said he regretted doing it at that moment, but at the time, that's what he felt representing that World Cup match."

The match between Argentina and the Netherlands during the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals was intense as the game ended 2-2, and the Argentines won 4-3 on penalties. Messi did that iconic celebration against the Netherlands after the Argentine had problems with the bench of the Dutch team, including the coach Louis Van Gaal. Even after the game finished, there was still animosity between Messi and the players from the Netherlands when Messi called out Dutch striker Wout Weghorst by saying, "Que miras, bobo."

Argentina was cruising in the match at first since Nahuel Molina scored in the 35th minute, and Messi scored a penalty in the 73rd minute. The Netherlands scored two late goals to send the game to extra time as Weghorst scored the brace. The penalty shootout was intense as well, and Lautaro Martinez scored the last penalty to send Argentine to the semi-final. The Argentina players ran to celebrate with the Inter Milan striker and made fun of the Netherlands players, who were then eliminated.
