Lionel Messi is preparing for Copa America with the Argentina national team, but in a recent interview, he caused a lot of shock by his words. In an interview with InfoBae, Messi was asked who the best team in the world is, and the Argentina star responded by naming the rival club he has faced for many years during his time at FC Barcelona. Messi said, “Real Madrid is the best team in the world, they have won the Champions League. If you go by results, Real Madrid is the best. If you go by level of the game, I think Manchester City are the best.” FC Barcelona fans were annoyed to hear arguably the biggest legend of the club complimenting Real Madrid, but others appreciated the honesty. Even Cristiano Ronaldo fans were happy to see Messi’s response and respected Messi for being honest on his answer despite being an FC Barcelona legend and fan. Some Barcelona fans admitted that the situation their club is in compared to Real Madrid and acknowledged Messi to be unbiased.
Messi played a total of 45 games as an FC Barcelona player against Real Madrid across all competitions, which included the Spanish Super Cup, Copa Del Rey, La Liga, and the Champions League. Messi won 19 matches, drew 11, and lost 15 matches against Real Madrid throughout his career. He scored 26 goals and provided 14 assists against Real Madrid as an FC Barcelona player.
Messi played a total of 778 matches for FC Barcelona across all competitions. He scored a total of 672 goals and provided 303 assists. With FC Barcelona, Messi won four Champions League trophies, three FIFA Club World Cups, ten La Liga titles, three UEFA Super Cups, seven Copa Del Reys, and eight Spanish Super Cups. Messi was a nightmare for Real Madrid fans, and after many years of competing against them, he still showed respect and gave the club credit for winning the Champions League this year and their potential in the next decade based on their young squad.
After winning the 2022 World Cup, many assumed that Messi was going to retire from the national team as he achieved the dream he also wanted, to win the World Cup for his country. Despite the huge win in 2022, he continues to play for Argentina and will play in the Copa America 2024. With years left, the 2026 World Cup approaches, and now some think it could be possible for the Argentine star to play in that World Cup.
When asked if he would play in the tournament, Messi said, “I said before that it depends on how I feel, and to be realistic with myself, it also depends on how I will be physically and whether I am still able to compete and help my teammates.. There is still a lot left.”
