Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are a great attacking duo that even Real Madrid struggled to contain. During their time at FC Barcelona, Messi and Suarez would win many games against Real Madrid in Spain, but they are now taking over the MLS with impressive performances. Soon, another attacking duo could arrive at the MLS, and they are also familiar with defeating Real Madrid in the past. Rumors in the MLS report that LA Galaxy are very interested in signing Marco Reus from Borussia Dortmund. The German attacking midfielder just played his last season with BVB, and his contract expires on June 30th, which will lead to him becoming a free agent. He wouldn’t be alone at LA Galaxy, as rumors suggest that the club will look to sign Robert Lewandowski. The current FC Barcelona striker had a great partnership with Reus during their time together at Borussia Dortmund, and now they could reunite in the MLS, becoming an elite duo like Messi and Suarez have shown at Inter Miami.
Lewandowski and Reus played together at Borussia Dortmund for 87 matches across two seasons. They combined for 22 goals together at BVB, and they reached the Champions League Final in 2013, where they lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich. In the semifinals, they defeated Real Madrid 4-1 in the first leg and then won 4-3 on aggregate to make the final. Their friendship was reportedly very strong, and they have lots of respect for one another, but they have played together since 2014.
While Reus seems easier to get for LA Galaxy since he will soon become a free agent, Lewandowski’s case could be difficult, especially this summer. The Polish striker has a contract with FC Barcelona until the summer of 2026. Lewandowski has been causing interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, and FC Barcelona would be willing to sell him for a big transfer fee, but the striker has refused to take a huge contract in order to stay in Spain. LA Galaxy would either wait until 2026 or sign him next year for a cheaper transfer fee. Lewandowski’s market value is at around $15 million, with next year likely dropping.
Messi and Suarez are among the top goalscorers of the MLS, as they both have 12 goals each. Suarez has five assists, while Messi has nine. Suarez has a total of 17 goal contributions in 16 matches, while Messi has 21 goal contributions in 12 matches. Inter Miami is currently first in the MLS Eastern Conference with 35 points after 18 league matches played, with their record being ten wins, five draws, and three losses. In Inter Miami’s last match in the MLS, they drew 3-3 with St. Louis City at the Chase Stadium with goals from Messi and Suarez in the game. Inter Miami will not count on the duo for more than five weeks as Messi and Suarez will be playing with their national teams during the Copa America.
