Xabi Alonso is one of the biggest names to take charge of the Liverpool squad. The former Liverpool midfielder is doing wonders at Bayer Leverkusen in his first full season as a manager. He showed glimpses of his talent as a coach in 2022 when he took Leverkusen from the bottom of the Bundesliga table to take them to 6th at the end of last season. This season, after 18 games, Leverkusen remains undefeated and is at the top of the Bundesliga with 48 points.
Alonso played with Liverpool for five years, from 2004-2009, and won a Champions League trophy in his first season with the Reds. Alonso is known as a Liverpool legend in Anfield and has expressed his desire to coach the Reds in the past. In 2018, Alonso said, "Yes, for sure, I have dreamt of [managing Liverpool]. But first, I have to prove myself. My link, my commitment, my passion with Liverpool is there.”
Liverpool would appreciate appointing Alonso as the new manager since his salary at Leverkusen is much less than Jurgen Klopp's. Klopp earns $18.9 million with a Liverpool contract that ends in 2026. Alonso also has a contract with Bayer Leverkusen that ends in 2026, and the Spanish manager earns 6 million euros a year. It would be a huge opportunity for Liverpool to bring in a manager who is familiar with the environment of Liverpool and has shown his qualities as a coach in such a short space of time.
