In an interview with Diario Ole, Inter Miami's Chief Business Officer Xavier Asensi was asked about convincing Lionel Messi to join the club last summer, in which he shocked the fans how he did it. Asensi revealed that he convinced Messi to move to Miami by proposing a great living environment in the city for his family compared to other places. Asensi said, "If you try to compete on equal terms with the French League, the English League, or the Spanish League, there are things that you can never compete with, so what I did was seek his heart and feelings and for him to remain in a good place suitable for his family, and this is what made me win the deal."
Asensi was at FC Barcelona before he joined Inter Miami, and he spoke about the comparison between the city of Barcelona and Miami, which was a key factor in convincing Messi to arrive at Inter Miami. Asensi said, "When he was in Barcelona, the city offered lots of things that the city of Manchester [for example] didn't offer. Things like the weather, the food, the quality of life, etc. These are things we have here in Miami."
Asensi praises Messi since he has brought lots of positives to Inter Miami since his arrival last July. The Inter Miami chief business officer said, "Messi changes everything for the better. The fact that we are contemporary with Leo Messi is something we must repeat almost every morning when we wake up. It radically changes you and transports you to another dimension."
Lionel Messi has made a huge impact on Inter Miami and soccer in the United States. The MLS viewership has grown over the past year, and Apple TV MLS subscriptions have increased drastically. Since his move to Inter Miami last July, Messi has played a total of 24 matches in all competitions, where he scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists. He won the club's first trophy when they won the 2023 Leagues Cup last summer in August.
