The UEFA Champions League is a competition every European team wants to be a part of. While big clubs are expected to qualify for this competition every year, Manchester United has not had that experience in recent years. Manchester United played Champions League football this year, but the team did not do well. The team finished last in their group, as Galatasaray, Copenhagen, and Bayern Munich finished above them. Qualification for the Champions League next season seems to be the goal for the team this season, but it looks complicated as every week passes by. Man United is currently 6th in the Premier League table and is far away on points to the fourth place spot.

Manchester United are 6th in the Premier League table with 47 points. Above them is Tottenham with 53 points, and in 4th place is Aston Villa with 55 points. Man United are counting on both Aston Villa and Spurs to lose points while themselves winning the next ten games left of the Premier League season. While being 8 points below Aston Villa in the league, the club will be hopeful that England earns an extra spot for the Champions League next season.

Man United will hope that Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, and West Ham United do well in Europe. If all teams do well in the next rounds, the 5th position in the Premier League will be an automatic spot for Champions League football next season. Man United is six points behind Spurs, who are 5th currently. In case Man United doesn't qualify for the Champions League next season, they will have to face a monetary penalty from their sponsor, Adidas.

Manchester United will face a monetary penalty of $12 million if they don't qualify for the Champions League

The Times reporter Martyn Ziegler reports that Manchester United will be hit with a $12 million penalty every time they fail to qualify for the Champions League under the terms of their new $114 million-a-year kit deal with Adidas. The clause will come into force from next year and is a change to the existing deal, whereby Manchester United was only penalized if they did not qualify for the competition for two seasons in a row.
