Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has insisted he retains the backing of the club's owners despite admitting his side needs to improve in the final third.

The Dutchman was speaking after his side played out a goalless draw at Aston Villa on Sunday, a result that leaves United struggling for consistency in the early stages of the Premier League season.

Despite the underwhelming performance, Ten Hag was keen to highlight the positives from the game. "We had a very good organisation and a very good personality in the team. Resilient, determined. So there was a very good team spirit," he told Sky Sports.

"We hardly conceded any chances. When you defend like that, you can have some luck, like at the end with the big chance on the second post.

"But that was pretty much the only chance they had. We had some control of possession. We created some chances, although not that many."

Ten Hag's comments come amid growing speculation over his future at Old Trafford. The club's co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, was in attendance at Villa Park, along with other senior figures, as the Red Devils struggled to break down their opponents.

However, the United boss sought to play down any suggestions of pressure, insisting that he has the full support of the club's hierarchy. "We know it’s not a good start, but the owners are with me," he said.

The Dutchman has faced criticism for United's lack of attacking threat this season, with the team failing to consistently create clear-cut chances. While Ten Hag acknowledged that his side needs to improve in this area, he remains confident that they can turn things around.

"We need to be more clinical in front of goal," he said. "We need to create more chances and take them. But I believe in this team and I believe we will get better."
