Hansi Flick is set to become the next FC Barcelona manager ahead of next season after the Catalan club announced a few days ago that Xavi would part ways with the club this summer. The German manager is set to arrive with different intentions for the team to what Xavi had planned this summer. This includes his coaching staff, as it will be a small number of members compared to Xavi’s coaching staff. According to Diarios AS, FC Barcelona has contacted Thiago Alcântara about becoming a player assistant to new head coach Hansi Flick. The Spanish midfielder is 33 years old and is leaving Liverpool FC this summer as a free agent. Thiago is currently injured but earned $12.8 million a year at Liverpool. Barcelona could offer him a similar salary to join the club or perhaps more since he would join as a free transfer.

The Spanish midfielder made a total of 100 appearances for FC Barcelona many years ago. Thiago scored 11 goals and provided 20 assists during his time with the Catalan club. With FC Barcelona, Thiago won one Champions League trophy, a FIFA Club World Cup, four La Liga titles, one UEFA Super Cup, two Copa del Rey trophies, and three Spanish Super Cups.

Thiago is familiar with Flick since they spent a good time together at Bayern Munich a couple of years ago. Together, they won the Champions League, a Bundesliga title, and a German Cup. The player-assistant role is hardly seen in the highest level of football, and if he does arrive at FC Barcelona in that role, it could witness the growth of another aspiring manager as well as having a crucial player in the squad. Thiago has been injured recently for a long period of time, which is what concerns Barcelona fans.

Thiago’s recent seasons with Liverpool

Thiago only played a total of 98 matches across all competitions for Liverpool since he arrived in 2020 from Bayern Munich, having won a treble. The Spanish midfielder scored three goals and provided six assists for the Reds. Thiago only played one game this season, which was only for less than 10 minutes against Arsenal in February. He got injured again and missed the rest of the season after not playing since last year.
