Deportivo Riestra has announced the signing of Mauro Smarra, a 25-year-old forward who made headlines as the top scorer in the Copa Potrero, an amateur football 8-a-side tournament organized by Sergio Agüero. Smarra arrives on a free transfer and has signed a contract until December 2026, bringing his scoring prowess to the Buenos Aires-based club.

The addition of Smarra follows a series of unconventional moves by Riestra, a club known for making waves in Argentine football. From their controversial promotion to the top flight to debuting a 14-year-old and including social media influencer "Spreen" in a first-division match, the "Malevo" continues to attract attention for its bold decisions.

A Striker with an Unusual Path

Mauro Smarra's rise comes after an impressive stint with Villa La Ñata during the Copa Potrero. The tournament, held a few months ago, drew criticism for including active professional players, allegations of betting activity, and other controversies. Smarra emerged as the top scorer, solidifying his reputation as a potent finisher.

Smarra joins Riestra during the club’s preseason under coach Cristián Fabbiani. Alongside him, the team has brought in seven other players, including defenders Juan Randazzo (Mushuc Runa, Ecuador), Mariano Bracamonte (Deportivo Morón), and Facundo Miño (Almirante Brown). The club has also added goalkeeper Juan Carlos Rolón (UAI Urquiza), midfielders Ariel Muñoz (Camioneros) and Gabriel Obredor (Villa Mitre), as well as forward Braian Guille (Colón de Santa Fe).

Building for the Future

Deportivo Riestra's active transfer window reflects their ambition to strengthen the squad for the upcoming season. Smarra's addition is a gamble on raw talent, but his success in the Copa Potrero suggests he could be a valuable asset for the team.

As Riestra prepares for the new campaign, fans and analysts will keep a close eye on how Smarra adapts to professional football. His signing continues the club’s tradition of taking risks and defying expectations.
