FC Barcelona’s season officially came to an end as they defeated Sevilla 2-1 last night in the last matchday of La Liga at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. The Catalan club will have a new manager next season, and potentially, there could be a lot of changes in the squad as well. Despite the win, many fans are frustrated with Marc Andre Ter Stegen after the goal he conceded against Sevilla. The Catalan club could potentially sell the German goalkeeper this summer as many Saudi Arabian clubs, like Al Ittihad, are interested in him. If FC Barcelona does sell this summer, the club will look for a replacement, and one of them could be Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The Argentine keeper is one of the best in the Premier League and has made a name for himself with the Argentina national team and during the 2022 World Cup. Barcelona would have to pay around $30 to $45 million this summer as he is currently valued at around $30 million, according to Transfermarkt.
Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martinez has played a total of 47 matches for Aston Villa this season across all competitions. He conceded 61 goals but kept clean sheets and secured a spot in the Champions League next season. Aston Villa finished 4th in the Premier League table with 68 points, and their record after 38 games was 20 wins, eight draws, and ten losses.
Ter Stegen has played a total of 36 matches for FC Barcelona this season across all competitions. The German keeper conceded 37 goals this season and kept 17 clean sheets. Barcelona finished second this season in La Liga with 85 points, and their record after 38 games was 26 wins, seven draws, and five losses.
After the victory against Sevilla, Ter Stegen spoke about how the season unfolded for them and what is next for his future. Ter Stegen said, “We have good players, but we must work more to compete. On a personal level, I have to improve.”
When asked about Xavi leaving the club, Ter Stegen said, “Xavi gave us a lot and we’re so grateful to him. We wish him all the best. He’s been a friend of mine for years, and it’s not easy. It’s time for Xavi to rest. He deserves all the best, and we’ll always be there for him.”
Ter Stegen wished Xavi all the best and wrote a message for him when it was official that he was leaving the club. Ter Stegen wrote, “You returned to your club when we needed a new direction. You brought belief back to our team, and under your guidance, we won titles again. Thank you and all the staff for the passion you put in every day. Now we part ways for a second time, but this will always be your club. It was a pleasure having you as a teammate and coach, and I’m grateful to keep having you as a friend. I wish you and your family all the best.”
