The Champions League final is the pure focus of the Real Madrid squad, but eventually, they will need to resolve an issue they have. One of the issues the club has is knowing the future of Luka Modric. The Croatian midfielder is a Real Madrid legend, but his contract with the club expires on June 30th. The Spanish champions have yet to offer him a new contract, and it is unknown whether they will. Modric wants to stay, but if he doesn’t, the MLS will likely be his destination. The MLS club that is reportedly interested is Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami. The MLS club’s co-owner, David Beckham, is serious about signing another star who plays in Europe, and Modric could be a great option to bring into the team. If Modric stays at Real Madrid, his salary of $23.3 million will be cut in half to extend a further year. Inter Miami will likely offer the Croatian midfielder around $11 million per year if he joins this summer.
Modric may have hinted at his future a couple of days ago when asked if he would stay or leave this summer. Modric spoke with Partidazo de COPE and said, “The decision on my future is made but I can’t tell you yet. I have always said I want to retire at Real Madrid, this is what I really want. This would be a dream, this is my home, the club of my life. I want a farewell like Toni Kroos.”
Modric has played a total of 533 matches for Real Madrid across all competitions throughout his career. He scored a total of 39 goals and provided 86 assists. The Champions League final will be his 534th game for Real Madrid, and many fans hope it isn’t his last one like Toni Kroos.
Many football fans are impressed with the high-level Modric brings despite being 38 years old. The Croatian midfielder is still crucial for Real Madrid. Modric about it ahead of the Champions League final and said, “My secret? I think it’s the love for the game. I enjoy every day, every moment in training. I work hard every day. It’s the commitment I have to football that keeps me at this level. I’m mentally strong, I’m convinced I can still do it at this level.”
While his career is almost done, Modric was asked about his relationship with the new generation of players like Vinicius Jr., Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, and more. Modric said, “Our relationship with the youngsters? We are here for them, to help them in any aspect, to show them how they have to behave, how they need to play. This club teaches you the winning mentality, we’re here to help. Of course our role is changing, because the new generation is coming. We’re here to help but also to compete with them because this keeps you motivated, you want to demonstrate that you can still compete with them. I think this is good for the team.”
