Without Benzema on the field, the player who put the team on his shoulders against Celtic

Fede Valverde has come on in leaps and bounds since his first pre-season tour of the US in 2018. It was clear to his teammates that the Uruguayan would go on to become an important member of the Madrid team. Toni Kroos took it upon himself to nurture the prospect on and off the field, after he was impressed by Valverde's humility.

“I immediately realised that he was a great kid,” said the German. Valverde gave his all in training and did not let fear hold him back. The player has since matured into one of the top three players in the world in Kroos's opinion. The veteran Madrid midfielder is particularly impressed by Valverde's versatility.

“He can play…as a winger but also as a number eight. To be honest that's where I see him…in the future,” purrs Kroos. Regardless of where he plays or current form, the German is convinced Valverde will be a world-class operator. In listing the youngster's qualities, Kroos highlighted his passing and creativity. “His shooting has always been incredible,” added Kroos.

Valverde's directness stands him in good stead for the future. He knows what to do when he has the ball, and has the technique and athleticism to execute it. Anyone who has seen his level of effort over 90 minutes also knows that the young Uruguayan can run for days. It seems he has all the attributes not only to be Kroos's successor, but cover other positions too.

A new dawn for Madrid

Madrid would be foolish not to hold on to him as part of their rejuvenation. Alongside Vasquez, Vinicius and Rodrygo, the new brigade is ready to propel Madrid to a record-extending 15th European crown. After their heroics last year, who is to say they will not win it again this year? With players like Valverde it will happen sooner rather than later.
