With a CV that includes five Ballon d'Ors and five Champions Leagues, one of the greatest players of all time now finds himself on the bench at Manchester United, contemplating a move away from the club that set him on the path to greatness. At first it was reported that Ronaldo was not happy to play in the second-tier Europa League, but no Champions League suitors came knocking for his signature.

Chelsea, Juventus and Atletico Madrid all reported an interest in the Portuguese striker but ended up passing on his expertise. It looks as though the Portuguese ace may have to take a pay cut to engineer a way out of Old Trafford. The arrival of Antony from Ajax means that Erik ten Hag has one more player whom he knows well to call on ahead of Ronaldo.

The Dutch manager concedes that Ronaldo will remain at Manchester United at least until January. It appears the new gaffer is not swayed by the 18 goals and three assists that the veteran notched in 30 appearances last season. Perhaps with a changed role Ronaldo may still be of use to Ten Hag. “The whole of his career under several managers he did several styles and systems. He always performed, so why can't he do this?” asked the Dutchman.

If Ronaldo does ultimately leave on a free in the winter, there are some places he could land. They may not be as glamorous as his old haunts but there is no shame in downsizing as retirement approaches. Why not move back to Sporting having moved back to United? Many players finish their careers where they started in a fairytale swan song.

Does Ronaldo want money or competition?

If Ronaldo wants to stay in Europe and play in the Champions League next season he could also consider Galatasaray. The Turkish club have a habit of signing high-profile players on free transfers. The MLS offers glamour if Ronaldo is done with competition at the highest level. The American league could also probably afford his salary.
