Since the appointment of Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager, there were many rumors about who could join and exit the English club. Among the short list of candidates if Cristiano Ronaldo transferred to a UEFA Champions League contender was a young 23-year-old Dutch player.
His name is Cody Gakpo (PSV Eindhoven's current captain). The striker was on ten Hag's short-list for a transfer move since the manager wasn't really sure if Cristiano Ronaldo could fit in his style and even football philosophy. Those rumors reached Gakpo in August and everyone was expectant of what would happen.
In the end, he stayed at PSV, and those rumors were almost gone when PSV's Director of Football Marcel Brands admitted Manchester United's interest. He even said that interest affected the striker's pre-season but then he sentenced: “I even think Cody would not have left at the end of the transfer period if the right amount had been offered.”
Man. Utd. wasn't the only club interested in the striker; Southampton and even Leeds United ask for him to PSV. But it seems Eindhoven's management wants more than 35 million Euros for him, a price that non of the English teams offered. In the end, Man. Utd. did sign a striker from the Eredivisie, the Brazilian star Anthony, for a price of 85 million Euros.
