Since scoring against Serbia and Montenegro while making his FIFA world cup debut for Argentina in 2006, Superstar Lionel Messi has been sending tongues wagging about the ultimate goal of winning the mundial. Barely two months after, his mesmerising display for Barcelona made many feel that, it is a dilly dong affair for Messi to win the world cup with the Albiceleste of Argentina and follow in the footstep of idol, Diego Armando Maradona.
Many critics had slammed Messi, saying the player always fail to replicate his impeccable form at clubside for the national team and doubt if the great player will win trophy for his country. But that view has been buried as Messi's inspired Argentina to two cup victories in year 2022. Three consecutive defeats in the finals of Copa America had rubbed salt in Messi's wound but had the last laugh as Argentina beat Brazil in the fianl to bag his first trophy for the white and sky blue.
What the press did with Lionel Messi that impressed everyone in the Qatar World Cup
He was able to play with Messi, he turned his back on him and now suffers in the World Cup
Moreso, the first edition of CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions (Finalissima) was won by Argentina. Captain Messi lifted the trophy after three unreplied goals against Italy, as Paulo Dybala, Lautaro Martinez and Angel Di Maria scored to the delight of Messi and Argentines. Prior to these achievements the stars in Argentina team were berated and Messi wasn't spared.
Much to the delights of patriots, Argentina arrived 2022 FIFA world cup in Qatar in a scintillating form, going 36 match unbeaten and tagged by many as favorite for the mundial. However, despite parading the crop of the COPA America victorious squad, many have been having a rethink after Saudi Arabia pulled one of major shocks in world cup history by winning 2-1 in the match played at Lusail Iconic stadium in Qatar.
Undoubtedly, Albiceleste has improved under Lionel Scaloni but fear has gripped die-hard fans of Argentina football after that shock defeat to Saudi Arabia. The team is placed at the bottom of its group after first game bringing the question: Is the world cup dream over for Messi? There is a player who played for River Plate and bagged nothing less than 21 goals, same for Zenith and currently doing wonders for Austin FC in America.
