Lionel Messi has been accused of asking extra time to prepare for what is expected to be his final appearance at a World Cup Finals. After finishing as a runner-up against Germany in Brazil 2014, it is believed that the captain of Argentina wants to go a step further and win it in Qatar 2022. However, his camp denies that he has asked for special leave to prepare.
Rumour has it Messi asked to miss PSG's final game before the international break against Auxerre, meaning he could join the national team setup from the 7th of November. It was believed there was a clause in the 35-year-old's contract that allowed him to do that, but the playmaker has denied that is the case.
Karim Benzema sustains leg injury 20 days before World Cup
A midseason World Cup has presented a challenge to many clubs, with players regularly injured during this time of year. High-profile absentees from Qatar include Paul Pogba and N'golo Kante of France. Luckily both have winner's medals from 2018. Messi will be keen not to join them on the injury list, and so will his country.
Argentina are currently enjoying a 35-match unbeaten run, which must place them amongst the favourites to win the tournament. Italy enjoyed a similar streak prior to winning Euro 2020 so the signs are good for Messi and his teammates. The last time Argentina enjoyed success at the tournament was when the late Diego Maradona lifted the trophy in 1986.
Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Poland are the first hurdles that will have to be overcome if Argentina are to enter the round of 16. They will be confident after winning the Copa America last season. PSG are five points clear in Ligue 1 so there is no reason for Messi to over exert himself. Having scored 12 times in all competitions this season though, it will be tough to rest him.
