Throughout the week, unfortunately two cases of racism happened in the world of football. One involving Atletico Madrid’s ultra fans who harassed and disturbed a mother and her childs who were attending the Classic Metropolitan Derby, and one more, where Napoli’s striker, Victor Osimehn, was subject of two videos posted by their Tik Tok administrator.
The videos quoted showed edits of Victor Osimehn where he was being called a “Coconut” and made mockery of the young striker that has given very important victories to Napoli. These videos were immediately deleted but multiple users managed to save them by recording them with their cellphones and instantly surfaced on social media.
Victor Osimehn and his manager Robert Candela saw the two footage and decided they would take legal actions on Napoli and their social media administrator, “ A serious fact that causes very serious damage to the player and adds to the treatment that the boy is suffering in the last period between media trials and fake news”. said Robert Candela on behalf of Victor Osimehn.
Even though of these controversial videos, Osimehn played against Udinese, -where the young striker contributed with a goal-, but he was noticeably uncomfort with the staff. Napoli just released a statement of the case and had this to say, “Calcio Napoli, wishing to avoid any exploitation of the issue, point out that we never wanted to offend or mock Victor Osimhen, who is a treasure of this club”.
The full statement of Napoli was published by insider Fabrizio Romano on his X account and it goes like this: “Calcio Napoli, wishing to avoid any exploitation of the issue, point out that we never wanted to offend or mock Victor Osimhen, who is a treasure of this club”.
“As proof of that, during the summer training retreat, the Club firmly rebuffed every offer that was received for the striker’s transfer abroad”.
“Social media, in particular TikTok, has always used an expressive form of language with a light heart and creativity, without wanting to, as in the case with Osimhen as protagonist, have any intention of insult or derision”, and finished “In any case, if Victor perceived any offense towards him, this was not what the club intended”.
Many X users have already commented on the post and they detected that Napoli didn’t even say they were sorry. @utdrobbo: “There is a seismic difference between "sorry for what we did" and "sorry you were offended by what we did." @CarefreeJonty: “Could have also said sorry but instead they’ve got all defensive. Embarrassing”, were some of the comments from X's users.
What do you think of this statement given by Napoli?
