The Portuguese superstar, who will not play in the Champions League this season, has scored 140 goals in the competition, and Messi is closing in.

The Champions League, is a luxury showcase for the best strikers in the world. Leo Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Cristiano Ronaldo or Karim Benzema have been the great strikers in the recent history of the competition.

The Argentine superstar and the Portuguese striker are the only two players to have scored more than 100 goals in the tournament. The record number of goals in the Champions League (excluding qualifying matches) is held by Cristiano Ronaldo with 140 goals, scoring them for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.

This season, ‘CR7’ will not play in the Champions League. Ten Hag's team will play in the Europa League, providing a good opportunity for Messi to get closer to his goal tally, with 125 goals for the 35-year-old Argentinian. The PSG player is behind Cristiano's record by 15 goals. He is very likely to cut his tally in the current edition of the tournament, which PSG kicks off against Juventus.

Mbappé and Neymar pose a problem for Messi

Although Messi is quite close to Ronaldo’s record, Messi is playing a different game in PSG to that of a goalscorer. As he has shown as the season begins, Messi is playing behind Mbappé and Neymar as the team’s playmaker, as ‘Kiki’ and ‘Ney’ are becoming PSG’s goal scorers. Furthermore, Messi has been relieved of his penalty duties in PSG, adding difficulty to his objetive of reaching Ronaldo’s record in the European competition.
