Manchester United will not play in this season's UEFA Champions League after a nightmare campaign in 2021-22. However, that hasn't stopped them from signing big in the current summer transfer window. After Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia, the Carrington club has confirmed the arrival of Lisandro Martinez, the defender coming from Ajax Amsterdam and for whom 57.3 million euros have been paid.
The English side has reported that the deal is awaiting medical examination, to close some details with the player and to receive the permission to work in the UK. The transfer, valued at almost 60 million euros, includes millions in bonuses and almost three million in payments to the clubs that trained Martinez.
With his move to Manchester United, Lisandro has become the most expensive Argentine defender of all time. With 57 million euros he surpasses Nicolas Otamendi (Manchester City, 44.5 million), Christian Romero (Juventus, 31.5 million), Walter Samuel (Real Madrid, 25 million) and Ezequiel Garay (Valencia, 24 million).
Martinez is the third signing of this summer market at Manchester United after the additions of Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia. The player knows well the new coach of the Old Trafford club, Erik Ten Hag, with whom he has won two Dutch Leagues and a Dutch Cup.
Martinez has made 120 appearances for Ajax, a club he joined in 2019 from Defensa y Justicia for £6.3 million. The defender has also made seven appearances for Argentina's senior national team.
