Aston Villa's new manager Unai Emery opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation on his first match in charge of his new team. Captain Emiliano Martinez started in goal with Matty Cash at right-back and Lucas Digne on the other side, while Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings teamed up at centre-back. Douglas Luiz and Leander Dendoncker linked up in midfield with Emiliano Buendia at No10.
Jacob Ramsey played down the right with Leon Bailey on the other side, while Ollie Watkins led the attack. The Emery era kicked off brilliantly as Villa opened the scoring against United. Watkins moved the ball forward brilliantly and found Bailey down the left who broke inside the area to beat De Gea with ease.

Digne made it 2-0 with a stunning free-kick that gave De Gea absolutely no chance. United clawed themselves back into the game with a very important goal before half-time. Shaw tried a shot from the left that deflected awkwardly off Ramsey to wrong-foot Martinez. Villa caught United off guard again like they did in the first half.
Watkins moved the ball forward nicely down the left and found the oncoming Ramsey, who delivered a powerful shot that gave De Gea no chance. United boss Ten Hag made a triple change as Malacia, Elanga and Martial entered for Shaw, Garnacho and Van de Beek respectively. Villa called for a red card when Bailey claimed he was elbowed by Martinez in the torso.
Ronaldo and Mings got into a wrestling scrap in the penalty area and were separated by their team-mates. The Villa ace appeared to be marking the United star a little too hard and that led to a heated confrontation. VAR checked for a red card on the grounds of possible violent conduct but found nothing.
