British police said Wednesday that they have issued a "conditional caution" to Manchester United player Cristiano Ronaldo for throwing an Everton fan's cell phone to the ground last April.

It is a type of caution that police often use against people with no previous record for minor offenses, such as drawing graffiti, the U.K. government describes on its official website.

The cautioned person must admit to committing the offense, thereby speeding up the legal process and avoiding going to trial, although the offense is recorded on his or her criminal record.

"We can confirm that a 37-year-old man appeared and was interviewed under caution in relation to an alleged assault and criminal damage," Merseyside Police (northern England) said in a statement. "The allegations relate to an incident following the soccer match between Everton and Manchester United at Goodison Park on Saturday, April 9," the security forces detailed. "The matter has been resolved with a conditional caution. The matter is now closed," the note adds.

Ronaldo’s frustration showed in defeat at Everton

The Portuguese footballer threw a 14-year-old fan's cell phone to the ground after the 1-0 defeat against Everton, as seen in images of the incident shared on social media. After the incident, Ronaldo apologized for his behavior and invited the fan to attend a match at Old Trafford "as a sign of fair play and sportsmanship”. The team’s defeat crushed their chances of qualifying for this year’s Champions League.
