The Madrid derby this past weekend was filled with controversy. First, it was Vinicius' dances, said to be a provocation to the fans and players of the opposite team. Then, racist allegations on a spanish TV show and an important backlash for spanish journalists. Trending topic and being cancelled, the Vinicius issue has become the eye of the storm.
Atlético's captain, Koke Resurrección is responsible, in part, for igniting the flame that started all of this controversy with his statement on the press in a post-match interview. The squad captain stated that ‘if Vinicius dances, there will for sure be trouble’. This was the start of the big controversy surrounding the derby and ended in the incidents seen inside and outside Metropolitano.

Now, almost 3 days and an official statement from La liga later, Atlético Madrid has finally addressed the racism issue that took place both outside and inside Civitas Metropolitano stadium on sunday. The Madrid derby showed many people on tv being racist towards Vinicius Jr. and holding monkey toys with Real Madrid shirts, calling the player a monkey.
Atlético's official claim states that they will have zero tolerance towards racism and classism inside and outside their stadium. “A few cannot smear the image of the thousands of atléticos that support their team with passion and respect for the rival." states the press release.
The official Atlético statement remarks that the club has ‘zero tolerance towards these acts and will not rest until they have eliminated it’. The club also assures that they will work alongside the authorities and identify those who engaged in racism and, if they were club associates, expel and ban them permanently from all club related activities.
