The Ecuador national team is currently without a coach, and it is for this reason that they have a long list of candidates to hire. The person at the top of this list is reportedly currently coaching in MLS.

The person is Matías Almeyda, coach of San Jose Earthquakes, a team with which he has had a high performance in the recent MLS is Back Tournament, being one of the top-scoring clubs in the competition, despite having been eliminated in the quarterfinals against one of the semifinalists, Minnesota United FC.

However, Matías Almeyda has a contract with San Jose Earthquakes until 2022, for which, in case of hiring the coach, the Ecuadorian soccer team would have to pay a contract termination clause, which is estimated to be 3 million dollars. It is for this reason that the departure of the MLS coach to the Ecuadorian team is complicated.

If Matías Almeyda decides to direct the Ecuador soccer team, and this same one pays his withdrawal clause, it would be the first experience of the Argentine coach in a national team. Matías Almeyda has made a significant impact on San Jose Earthquakes despite not winning a title to date; however, the coach will have to decide what his future direction will be.
