The surprises continue for MLS 2022 and it was revealed that the LA Galaxy is going for Teji Savanier to replace Jonathan Dos Santos, who went to play for Club America of Liga MX.
The 30-year-old French midfielder is considered the engine of Montpellier's attack, a team that is ranked in the top 5 of the leading teams in France's Ligue 1.
It is expected that in the next few weeks, the Galaxy will make the first offer for the Frenchman, who is needed to restructure the team.
But they are also a little against time for his hiring since before the start of the 2022 MLS season, the Los Angeles team will hold three preparation matches.
These matches will be played against Toronto FC, New England Revolution, and DC United, duels for which coach Greg Vanney hopes to have the Frenchman available.
The only drawback with the arrival of the Frenchman would be his cost as he has a contract with Montpellier, and his termination clause exceeds 12 million euros.
Jona's arrival at the Galaxy was seen at the time as the best investment by the Los Angeles club, especially because of the economic effort to bring a player from Europe.
Jona had played not only for Villarreal but also for Messi's Barcelona, so all the club's eyes and hopes were on him.
However, what started as a great bet ended up becoming a promise that was never fulfilled because the player never lived up to expectations.
To begin with, the player did not contribute to the club winning any titles. And from 2017 to 2021, the player earned earnings of more than US$16 million, according to Mexican media.
What's worse, the player only scored 7 goals and 12 assists in all that time. In addition, the player only played in one playoff series.
And it was because of these numbers that the Los Angeles club decided to let the Mexican player go, who left for Club America of Liga MX.
Therefore, his departure does mark a restructuring, beyond the new additions, in the way they look for talent.
It now appears that the club is conducting more exhaustive searches to obtain talent that will not cost them so much and that will perform well.
The French midfielder has so far accumulated 62 appearances for his current team, Montpellier HSC, in which he has scored 16 goals and provided 13 assists.
That may not seem like a very impressive number, but it is his style of play that the Galaxy needs.
In the words of analyst Alex Barker of Player Analysis, it is on set pieces and in open play where the player shines above the rest.
The 30-year-old Frenchman passes the ball as well as he shoots. Among his skill set, Savanier drops deep down the field to receive the ball.
As such, he could be an excellent addition to the Galaxians' backcourt, along with their other addition from the current market, Dutchman Kevin Leerman who arrived as a transfer from Inter Miami CF.
