Salaries are one of the most important parts of pursuing a career as an athlete. Hard work means that great talents can command stratospheric contracts and unimaginable sums of money in their lifetime. However, when starting out as a rookie, what salary can you expect in a league like MLS?

Over the last few years, important figures such as David Villa, Andrea Pirlo, Lorenzo Insigne or most recently Gareth Bale have come to Major League Soccer during the final stages of their careers to earn significant amounts of money. However, for youngsters who are promoted from youth teams or selected in the respective Drafts, their salary income tends to vary to sports such as basketball or baseball.

In the United States, most professional soccer players earn less than $100,000 a year in total compensation from their teams. Dozens of them earn the base minimum of $54,500, which in some markets would make it difficult to afford a decent apartment

How much can a rookie make in MLS?

According to MLS, Salaries for non-designated players range from $36,500 to $387,500. The league minimum is $36,500 for players under the age of 25. If a player is over the age of 25, the league minimum is $48,500. Extremely important amounts for any professional athlete.
