Douglas Costa, who has a contract with Juventus until 2023, is leaving on a six-month loan to Los Angeles Galaxy, pending official confirmation. The Brazilian winger signed for the Turin club for 46 million euros paid to Bayern (first six on loan and then 40 as a permanent signing).
MLS 2022: DeAndre Yedlin to join Inter Miami CF
According to information from Rodrigo Serrano, AS USA's Los Angeles correspondent, sources inside the LA Galaxy revealed that Brazilian winger Douglas Costa has already joined the LA Galaxy and will arrive as a Designated Player.
Costa did not fully succeed at Juventus. In May he was loaned to Gremio, where he also failed to shine: 3 goals in 26 games, and the team was relegated to the second division.
Costa would earn US$5 million per season and would form a unique attack in MLS alongside players such as Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández, Dejan Joveljic, Samuel Grandsir, Efraín Álvarez and Kévin Cabral.
Compared to Chicharito, the Brazilian would earn one million dollars less than the Mexican. Javier Hernández earns US$6 million per season since he signed contract with the Californian team.
Douglas Costa has played for Gremio of Brazil, Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine, Bayern Munich of Germany, and Juventus of Italy. In his entire soccer career, the South American striker has played a total of 461 games, scored 68 goals, and has 99 assists.
Among his achievements, the following stand out: Five League championships with Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine; three editions of the Bundesliga, one Club World Cup, one German Cup and one German Super Cup with Bayern Munich, as well as three Serie A, one Italian Cup and one Italian Super Cup with Juventus.
Douglas Costa, known for his great technical skills, would become the LA Galaxy's third Designated Player, along with Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez and Kevin Cabral. The Los Angeles club already has all three player slots under the U-22 Initiative filled, with the striker Dejan Joveljic, midfielder Efrain Alvarez and defender Julian Araujo.
The Galaxy have an available slot to bring in a Designated Player following the departure of Mexican international Jonathan dos Santos, now playing for Liga MX club Club America.
The five-time MLS Cup-winning club was very active over the winter, adding players such as Raheem Edwards, Mark Delgado and Kelvin Leerdam, while signing veterans Victor Vazquez and Sacha Kljestan to new contracts as the team prepares for its second season under head coach Greg Vanney.
