It was confirmed today that Cole Bassett of the Colorado Rapids and USMNT international will leave for Feyenoord, on loan with an option to buy, making him the second of the team's youth players to move to European soccer.
The first was Sam Vines, who left for Europe last June to play for Royal Antwerp. This shows that MLS soccer is developing players that are of interest to European soccer.
The confirmation occurred a few hours ago when the Colorado club decided to inform of the transfer of the player through their social networks, with an emotional video of the player thanking his now-former team.
The player will be on loan to the team for 18 months with an option to buy, which could allow him, if he consolidates, to attract the attention of bigger teams in Europe.
Basset is all Major League Soccer promise who has gradually been gaining prominence and his numbers don't lie: the player has scored 13 goals and 11 assists in 72 regular-season games since making his professional debut in September 2018.
And just last December, he scored in his international debut for the U.S. Men's National Team in a 1-0 friendly win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The player's departure to European soccer was cause for celebration by the club's supporters, but especially by Padraig Smith, the team's general manager.
Smith said of Bassett's departure: "We're incredibly proud of Cole for having earned this opportunity to pursue his dream of playing in Europe".
The general manager also celebrated the fact that the development they are giving to their young talent is paying off as the young talents can achieve their dream of playing in European soccer.
"This move also reflects our steadfast commitment to develop young players and provide a pathway to the highest levels of the game. We look forward to seeing Cole's continued growth and wish him all the best as he takes this next step in his career”, were his words.
Bassett had turned down a move to Portuguese club Benfica last summer to remain in Colorado in search of glory.
