MLS 2022 kicked off with a bang today as Carlos Vela scored a hat-trick in less than 50 minutes in the LAFC vs Colorado Rapids match to secure the lead for Steve Cherundolo's team.
Carlos Vela already knows where he’ll play after leaving Los Angeles FC
The Mexican's first goal came from the penalty spot after the referee called a handball in the Rapids' area.
The Mexican was the one chosen to take the penalty, who calmly and left-footed the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0 in the 29th minute of the match.
The second goal of the Chivas homegrown player was in the 35th minute when he received a deep pass and withstood the strong mark of Lalas Abubakar, to beat William Yarbrough and score the second goal of the match and make the score 2-0.
The Mexican's third goal came in the 50th minute when he cut right to the center, settled the ball, and shot with his left foot to get the ball as far away from the rival goalkeeper as possible.
In this way, the Mexican player opened the 2002 MLS campaign in stark contrast to the 2021 season, in which injuries did not allow him to display all his abilities as he has done in today's game.
In MLS 2021, Vela played 20 (out of 34) regular-season games and left an individual record of five goals and five assists, as well as a total of 1,268 minutes played. There was much talk of a possible departure, however, Carlos renewed for one more year with Los Angeles FC.
After Vela's spectacular display this afternoon, many of his followers on Twitter are wondering if Gerardo Martino will now ask him to return to El Tri.
But the problem is not Gerardo Martino, but Vela himself, who has already spoken to the coach of the Mexican national team, and told him that at this moment his priority is his family and his club.
It was Martino himself who detailed the conversation he had with the LAFC striker and explained:
"He told me that he preferred to give priority to both his club and his family, and then the situation practically ended at that moment. And I think that for a person as thoughtful as Carlos, who is very clear about what he wants to do, it is very important to define it calmly and above all to be consistent with his ideas. It seems to me that he has been so permanently in his career".
