Gerardo “Tata” Martino is having problems to build the roster that he will call for the upcoming CONCACAF Qualifiers match window, given that some of the usual players he calls might not be available as their dealing with injuries.

The last FIFA match window will decide the national teams that will play in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which is why Martino will have to call players that he’s not used to have on his roster, even if their going through a good streak.

Marcelo Flores is one of the players that might have his chance of finally debuting with the senior squad, as the absence of Andrés Guardado, who left the game of Real Betis against Atlético Madrid injured, will open the door for the 18-year-old offensive midfielder.

Even if he doesn’t have the experience that Gerardo Martino likes his players to have, he’s showed a lot of talent, which has made him play with the Arsenal U-23 squad, just one step below the Premier League, where he could debut soon.

One player is not happy with his call

Andrés Guardado knows that he’s on his last years as a professional player and was considering retiring from Mexico National Team after Qatar 2022 to open the door for the younger generations, something that might happen sooner and not in the way he expected.

The 35-year-old midfielder knows that the injury he had against Atlético might not only cost him the call for the upcoming FIFA match window but has also jeopardized his arrival in the 2022 FIFA World Cup if his replacement performs better than what he’s done so far.

If “Tata” Martino ends up calling Flores for the games against USMNT, Honduras and El Salvador, one of the so-called sacred cows that El Tri has will consider stepping away from El Tri, as a good performance of Flores will mean the end of his stint with the Aztec squad.

Which other players are questionable for the FIFA match window?

Reports suggest that both Rogelio Funes Mori and Diego Lainez are also dealing with lingering injuries that might prevent them from being part of Martino’s roster, although it’s yet to be seen how his recovery develops.
