Now that Mexico National Team knows their rivals for the Group Stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Gerardo “Tata” Martino will have until November to build the best possible squad to face the three most important games of his stint.
El Tri will face Poland on November 22 in what will be the first game of the three they will play before the end of November. At least on paper, it will be the most equilibrated game of the three, as both teams have a similar level.
The biggest threat from the Polish squad is Robert Lewandowski, although the level showed by Johan Vásquez and César Montes on the last FIFA match window shows that El Tri is well prepared to face any striker.
But Qatar 2022 opens new possibilities for the attending teams, as the rosters will be expanded from 23 to 26 players, giving Martino three more spots to add another defender that can improve the competence level in El Tri’s camp. But it also gives him the chance of finally having Carlos Acevedo as the fourth goalkeeper.
Gerardo Martino has labeled Carlos Acevedo as the fifth goalkeeper on his list, behind Guillermo Ochoa, who will be the starting goalkeeper, Rodolfo Cota, Alfredo Talavera and Jonathan Orozco, who wasn’t part of the last call given an injury he suffered with Xolos de Tijuana.
But after the last CONCACAF Qualifiers match window, Acevedo not only impressed Martino and his coaching staff, but also gathered attention from Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven, who might try to acquire him over the summer, as they won’t have a starting goalkeeper.
It’s yet to be seen if Acevedo climbed steps on Martino’s list after seeing him train for two weeks, but if his move to Europe ends up happening, there doesn’t seem to be a reason for Martino to not call him, as he will have at least three months of experience in a more competitive league than Liga MX.
Even if Acevedo doesn’t manage to sneak in the final roster of the Mexican national team for Qatar 2022, it’s almost certain that he will be the starting goalkeeper for the 2026 World Cup, as all the other goalkeepers in the current roster will be at least 39 years old and possibly retired.
There’s just one thing keeping away Javier Hernández from wearing Mexico National Team colors again
