According to the statement released by the Mexican National Team, "The coach has not received medical clearance from the surgical procedure he underwent last February, which prevents him from traveling by plane to avoid any risk to his vision". 

Jorge Theiler, under the close supervision of Gerardo Martino, will be in charge of the game against Guatemala, in this friendly match that will serve as preparation for El Tri and the coach to have a better performance, with a view to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022. 

The problem has haunted Martino 

This is not the first time that the head coach of the Mexican National Soccer Team has been unable to travel with the team to its matches outside Mexico, as the same thing happened to him in the last World Cup Qualifiers.

Martino had to miss the games against Costa Rica, Panama, and Honduras because, according to medical recommendations, he is still unable to board a plane due to pressure changes. 

These pressure changes could damage the health of his right eye, which is where he suffered the retinal detachment that has affected him so much. It was in September 2021 when Martino underwent an operation to treat this health problem, and in early April he underwent a new operation.

The operation he underwent this month was through laser technology since he had a blocked tear duct.
