Mexico National Team has six months to prepare for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as the level that the Aztec squad showed during the CONCACAF Qualifiers won’t be enough to compete against Poland, Argentina and even Saudi Arabia.
Gerardo Martino already found the perfect striker to replace Raúl Jiménez in Mexico National Team
Gerardo “Tata” Martino knows this, which is why he called-up a 36-man roster for the friendly games that El Tri will face in the upcoming days, as well as the two matches from the CONCACAF Nations League, where he’ll try young players to start the generational change needed in the roster.
According to reports from David Medrano, the Argentine coach already defined 20 out of the 26 players that will go to Qatar, but one of the things that El Tri is still missing is a striker that can score consistently, which is why he had conversations with Javier “Chicharito” Hernández to return.
Jiménez has been the starting striker for the past few years, although the poor contributions that he had could cost him the starting role in El Tri, as he only managed to score three goals in the Qualifying stage, all of them via penalty kick.
But during an interview with W Deportes, Martino confirmed that his plan is to recover Jiménez’s level before the World Cup, which is why he will keep his place in the starting XI regardless of the return of “Chicharito”, who has scored six goals in the current season.
“Raúl has been having problems recovering his level. We need to help him. He is our number 9, our referent”, Martino said, which is why the only way in which Hernández will return to the lineup is if he keeps up with the good performances and Jiménez doesn’t recover in the upcoming months.
