Even if Mexico National Team have already ensured their participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and that they know the rivals they’ll be facing in the group stage -Poland, Argentina and Saudi Arabia-, they still lack a good striker.
During the CONCACAF Qualifiers, the Mexican national team were able to score more than one goal in five of the 14 games they played, and only in one of those games they scored three goals, on the 3-0 victory over Honduras in October.
In total, the Aztec squad scored 17 goals over the 14 games, a number too low if it’s taken in consideration the teams they faced. Added to that, Mexico National Team had two scoreless draws -against USMNT and Costa Rica- and weren’t able to score against the Stars and Stripes on their visit to Cincinnati.
That’s why not only Gerardo “Tata” Martino is looking for a new striker, as he knows that one of the weakest spots of his roster is the offense, but the players are also requesting the return of Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, especially if it is to replace Rogelio Funes Mori.
Currently, Javier Hernández has regained his shape and is one of the best players for LA Galaxy, who even named him captain for the 2022 MLS Season., So far, “Chicharito” has scored four goals in six games, including a brace against Portland Timbers.
On his third season with the Galaxy, Hernández keeps improving his goaling streak, as he scored 17 goals in 21 games last season, something that didn’t go unnoticed for some of his former teammates in El Tri, including Hirving “Chicharito” Lozano and Raúl Jiménez.
The two Mexican attackers know that having Javier Hernández in El Tri would be an improvement from the current forwards that Martino calls, as Funes Mori only scored one goal in the CONCACAF Qualifiers and Martín two.
During an interview for TV Azteca, when he was asked if Hernández could make it to the World Cup, Martino said that he’s always on El Tri’s radar, but there’s other things keeping him away from El Tri, as the broken relationship with Yon de Luisa and FMF.
