Luis Romo and Roberto Alvarado left Cruz Azul for the Clausura 2022. Both players were essential for La Máquina to break a 23-year drought without winning a title, after winning the championship in Clausura 2021 under Juan Reynoso.

Either Funes Mori or Martín won’t make it to Qatar now that Santiago Giménez is on a scoring streak

Romo went to Monterrey in a trade for Charly Rodríguez, while Alvarado was traded to Chivas for Uriel Antuna. Both the midfielder and the striker had problems adapting to their respective teams and lost prominence as they had with Cruz Azul.

Fortunately for them, at the end of the Clausura 2022, their performances began to improve with their teams, and they once again showed their best version, just as they did with La Máquina. Tata Martino has taken these players into account during his tenure as coach of the Mexican national team and now for the friendly matches in preparation for the World Cup in Qatar, he has called them to see if they can earn a place in El Tri.

Martino called Cruz Azul players?

The players that Tata Martino took to play the friendlies against Nigeria, Ecuador and Uruguay were Santiago Giménez, Erik Lira and Julio César Domínguez. Of the three players, only the La Máquina striker was not an undisputed starter in the team, while Lira and Domínguez were players who recurrently appeared in the Cementeros' starting lineup.
